Anne convinced me to take the tour. She met Frank while serving at The Royal Oak Pub. She said he was quiet, if not a little strange, but he was cute, and he paid with a black card. Frank wanted someone to write an article about his home, a home designed for him by his father, a reasonably sought-after architect who had disappeared without a trace. On one of his jobs, Anne explained. You’re not allowed to take photos or notes. You must write it after the fact. I was hesitant, but more than that, I was lonely...

the stars falling in an enraged dance of constellations,
shifting and gaining speed,
tearing the earth into bite-sized pieces
for an emaciated galaxy...

“Don’t push me.” My chest tightened in a vice grip as I attempted to rein in my anger.
“Evie, come on,” Violet said. “I hear you whispering to her when you talk to me on the phone. It’s not right.”
“You’re being ridiculous.”
Violet sighed. “Come live with me, Evie. It’ll be good for you—for us. I can take care of you.”
“I am forty-eight. I don’t need your help.”
“Evelyn, please, we’ve been friends for over thirty years. I know you,” Violet begged.
“Not anymore.” I slammed down the phone.
The door creaked open behind me...
