Meet the Author

Cait Yaga (she/her) is an author, editor, researcher, and avid reader who unapologetically explores themes of resilience, agency, power, and morality. Her writing is haunting, visceral, and propulsive, and sometimes borders on the outlandish and strange. As a queer, AuDHD woman, she is not afraid to incorporate contentious issues. She lives in central Canada with her partner and their long-haired tuxedo cat, Sushi.

Yaga is currently working on her fourth novel. When she's not writing, she's wandering their property looking for bones, feathers, and rocks to add to her oddity collection.

This collection of short stories is viscerally atmospheric. The works read more like folktales than fiction, and are honey-rich with El-Mohtar's poetic voice. Reading her stories feels like diving into a moss-filled forest lit with sparkling dew and dappled sunlight.

My favourites are Seasons of Glass and Iron, The Green Book, The Truth About Owls, and John Hollowback and The Witch.

Every single poem in this collection is a devastatingly beautiful punch to the gut. This poetry collection took me so long to get through, because every poem had me breathless and pausing for reflection. It's truly one of the most masterful collections I have ever read.

THIS is the poetry I want. Real, heart-wrenching, emotion-filled, poetry. Break me open. Make me see something I haven't seen before, feel something I haven't felt before. Show me a world I do not know, by privilege or not. Teach me empathy by ripping my heart in two so that your words are a forever thread holding me together.

If you read my last review, you'll know that as I read THE OTHER VALLEY, I could not shake THE GIVER from my mind. I haven't read the latter since childhood, and needed to know why my brain was adamant about this connection. I now know why.

Much like THE OTHER VALLEY, THE GIVER takes place in an isolated, heavily-governed community. There were quite a few similarities, so my mind is at ease now. However...

I forgot how incredibly dark THE GIVER is. And after spending multiple years researching cults, I am stunned by the correlations. It was like seeing an old friend through a different set of lenses. It's absolutely insane how age changes our views and perceptions of stories. I'm still...wow. I can't believe I read this at such a young age, haha.

Anyways, I have the other three books on order, so those reviews will be coming this year as well :)

After having the privilege of meeting @scottalexanderhoward I decided it was finally time to get this book.

I'll admit, it intrigued me for a long time, but I felt like I was getting two very different impressions of it from its marketing, so I had put it off.

But, you guys. Seriously. You need to read this.

This is one of the most beautiful and intriguing novels I've read in a LONG time. The plot is completely unique (to me anyways). The writing is poetic and literary. And the way he brings the story full circle at the end is just incredible. I had no idea how it was going to end, and it couldn't have been more perfect.

For some reason, it feels nostalgic in a childhood way, and I'm not entirely sure why. I do know that I keep thinking about The Giver, despite not having read it in years and not remembering what it's about, so I think I'll read that next. Anyways...

Incredible. Masterful. Pure art. Please read this.
